A Short History of Sudan

A Short History of Sudan

Sudan, Africa’s third-largest country, has a complex and dynamic history shaped by ancient civilizations, colonial rule, internal conflicts, and modern struggles for democracy. From the ancient Kingdom of Kush to independence, civil wars, and the recent political transitions, Sudan’s past is marked by resilience and transformation.

Ancient Sudan and the Kingdom of Kush (c. 2500 BCE–350 CE)

The region that is now Sudan was home to some of the earliest human civilizations. The most notable was the Kingdom of Kush, which flourished along the Nile River in what is now northern Sudan.

Key Features of the Kushite Civilization:

Napata and Meroë: The Kushites ruled from Napata and later Meroë, developing a powerful empire that rivaled Egypt.

25th Dynasty of Egypt (c. 750–656 BCE): The Kushite rulers, known as the Black Pharaohs, conquered Egypt and ruled as its 25th dynasty.

Meroitic Writing: The Kushites developed their own script, though it remains only partially deciphered.

Decline: The kingdom collapsed around 350 CE, likely due to invasions by the Aksumite Empire from Ethiopia.

Medieval Sudan and the Rise of Islam (500–1500 CE)

After the fall of Kush, Christian kingdoms such as Nobatia, Makuria, and Alodia emerged in Sudan. These kingdoms resisted Arab and Islamic expansion for centuries.

By the 14th–16th centuries, Islam gradually spread through trade and intermarriage, leading to the decline of Christianity in Sudan. The Funj Sultanate of Sennar (1504–1821) emerged as a dominant Islamic state, uniting much of central Sudan under Muslim rule.

Turco-Egyptian Rule and the Mahdist Revolt (1821–1898)

In 1821, Sudan was invaded by Muhammad Ali, the Ottoman ruler of Egypt. The Turco-Egyptian administration exploited Sudan’s resources and intensified the slave trade, leading to widespread unrest.

In response, a religious leader named Muhammad Ahmad declared himself the Mahdi (Messianic leader) in 1881, launching a revolt against foreign rule. The Mahdist forces defeated the Egyptians and British, establishing the Mahdist State (1885–1898). However, the Mahdist regime collapsed after British forces, led by Lord Kitchener, reconquered Sudan in 1898.

Anglo-Egyptian Sudan (1899–1956)

Sudan was placed under Anglo-Egyptian rule, with Britain controlling the administration. The colonial government imposed economic changes, such as the expansion of cotton production, which benefited Britain but marginalized many Sudanese.

The British also pursued a Southern Policy, isolating the South from the North by promoting Christian missionary work and restricting Arabic influence. This division would later fuel conflicts between North and South Sudan.

Sudan’s Independence and Civil Wars (1956–1983)

In 1956, Sudan gained independence from Britain and Egypt, but political instability quickly followed. Sudan’s first government struggled with ethnic, religious, and regional divisions.

First Sudanese Civil War (1955–1972)

Before independence, southern Sudanese feared domination by the Arab-Muslim North. This led to the First Sudanese Civil War (1955–1972), with the South demanding autonomy. The war ended with the Addis Ababa Agreement (1972), granting the South self-rule.

However, tensions remained, especially as northern leaders sought to impose Islamic laws nationwide.

Islamization and the Second Sudanese Civil War (1983–2005)

In 1983, President Jaafar Nimeiri declared Sudan an Islamic state and introduced Sharia law, even in the Christian and animist South. This triggered the Second Sudanese Civil War (1983–2005), led by the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) under John Garang.

This war was one of Africa’s longest and most devastating, killing over 2 million people and displacing millions more. It ended with the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in 2005, which allowed for a referendum on South Sudanese independence.

Darfur Conflict (2003–Present)

In 2003, war erupted in Darfur, western Sudan, where non-Arab groups rebelled against the government, accusing it of neglect. The government responded with brutal force, supporting the Janjaweed militia, which carried out massacres, leading to genocide allegations.

The conflict has killed hundreds of thousands and displaced millions, and although peace efforts have been made, violence continues.

South Sudan’s Independence (2011) and Ongoing Sudanese Crises

In 2011, South Sudan voted overwhelmingly for independence, becoming the world’s newest country. While this ended decades of North-South conflict, Sudan faced new internal challenges:

Economic Collapse – South Sudan took 75% of Sudan’s oil reserves, crippling Sudan’s economy.

Political Instability – President Omar al-Bashir, in power since 1989, faced growing protests.

Human Rights Violations – Crackdowns on dissent, censorship, and conflict in regions like Darfur, Blue Nile, and South Kordofan continued.

Fall of Omar al-Bashir and Sudan’s Ongoing Transition (2019–Present)

In 2019, after months of protests, Omar al-Bashir was overthrown by the military, ending his 30-year rule. A transitional government was established, led by civilian and military leaders.

However, in 2021, the military staged a coup, disrupting Sudan’s path to democracy. Protests and international pressure have continued, but Sudan remains in political uncertainty, struggling with economic hardships, civil unrest, and humanitarian crises.

Conclusion

Sudan’s history is one of great civilizations, colonial struggles, devastating wars, and ongoing efforts for peace and democracy. While challenges remain, the resilience of the Sudanese people continues to shape the nation’s future.

How Africans Are Paying for the War in Ukraine

Many Africans living in Europe are unaware that they are directly paying for the war in Ukraine. They assume the war is merely happening, but since its onset, the cost of living has surged across all European countries.

While this crisis has impacted nations worldwide, people residing in Europe are bearing an exorbitant financial burden. Inflation has affected nearly everything—food, water, energy, housing, transportation, taxes, and more.

Prices have skyrocketed and remained high due to the war in Ukraine. Meanwhile, most European countries are prioritizing defense spending while cutting back on welfare and aid programs.

You might assume they are addressing real security threats, but this is nothing more than a facade. It is deception.

One must ask: where exactly is the security threat coming from? Who is truly endangering Europe?

Western leaders disguise their actions under the pretense of self-defense, claiming to protect themselves from Russian aggression or an impending invasion.

However, these accusations are baseless and absurd. Russia has no time for such fabrications; they are far more strategic and intelligent than their adversaries.

In fact, Russians are among the most truthful and trustworthy people in the world. They are the only Caucasian nation without a history of slavery or participation in the transatlantic slave trade—a fact worth recognizing.

History is repeating itself. During the so-called world wars—essentially European wars—African soldiers were forcibly conscripted by colonial powers and sacrificed their lives on the battlefield. Yet, their contributions have been forgotten, and they were never compensated.

Now, Africans are once again paying the price for a war they did not start. They bear the economic burden of this senseless European conflict in Ukraine.

While the world condemns Russia, the true aggressor is the West. If NATO had never expanded, Russia would have had no reason to intervene in Ukraine. But because Western powers seek to provoke and ultimately dismantle Russia, they paint it as the villain and attempt to turn it into a global pariah. However, their agenda has failed. Russia will continue to prosper.

The Russian people uphold honor and dignity; they speak with integrity and stand by their word.

Meanwhile, the West stands as the pinnacle of hypocrisy. It professes to champion human rights and free speech while consistently acting in direct contradiction to these ideals. Its history is riddled with deceit, corruption, and oppression.

The West seeks to dismantle Russia to maintain its hegemonic grip on Africa. But its plans have failed. It has already lost this battle, even if it has yet to realize it. The struggle will continue, but ultimately, those who resist progress and seek to dominate others will face their downfall.

The West has long sought to keep Africa in a state of poverty and instability for its own survival. But their time is up.

If you are an African, I urge you to stay informed and pray for the liberation of our continent. I see progress, peace, and an end to the injustices that have plagued Africa due to the greed of former colonial powers.

God bless Africa. God bless the world.

Why the West Wants to Destroy Russia – The Road to WWIII

This is not a joke! Zelenskyy has just returned from the White House, where he refused to sign the mineral deal—a decision that, in American terms, would have been a path to peace.

He had a heated exchange with President Trump and Vice President Vance yesterday, making it clear that he intends to continue the war. The Europeans, with the exception of Viktor Orbán of Hungary, supported him.

There is something crucial I want to mention here. As I've discussed in my previous articles on the war in Ukraine, it has been evident from the start that Russia is not just fighting Ukraine but is engaged in a battle against the corrupt forces of the West.

The challenge, however, is that Zelenskyy remains trapped in delusion, living in a false reality where he serves as a tool for these malevolent actors—those who continue to sacrifice his people and their future.

The truth is, these forces do not want the war to end until Russia is destroyed. Why? Because their ultimate goal is to recolonize Africa.

Europe is currently undergoing a massive economic decline, living off its past glory while desperately seeking ways to regain control. As African nations increasingly align with Russia for defense and military independence, Europe is in distress.

Former colonial powers such as France, the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, and others do not want peace in Ukraine. Not because they genuinely care about Ukraine—they are fully aware of the atrocities occurring there—but because they seek to weaken Russia, breaking the security backbone that Africa relies on.

This would allow them to resume their exploitation of the continent, continuing their agenda of instigating wars and coups to breed insecurity and underdevelopment.

Their strategy involves arming terrorists, destabilizing African nations, and looting resources—both human and mineral—while keeping the continent impoverished.

But their agenda has failed. Their evil plans have been thwarted and will ultimately collapse.

Africa will not be recolonized. Russia will not be defeated. The corrupt forces of the West will be exposed and brought to justice. Peace and stability will prevail in the world.

Thank God for President Donald Trump, who refuses to play along with their schemes. They are frustrated and angry with him—perhaps even plotting against him—but their plans will fail. Justice will triumph over darkness. Wickedness will not prevail against truth.
Due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, European nations have increased their defense spending while cutting welfare and aid programs. But one must ask: where is the actual threat coming from? Who is truly endangering Europe?

They justify their actions under the guise of self-defense, claiming to protect themselves from Russian aggression. However, these claims are nothing more than propaganda. Russia has no interest in these baseless accusations; they are far more strategic and intelligent.

In fact, Russians are among the most truthful and honorable people in the world. They are the only Caucasian nation with no history of participating in slavery or slave trade—an extraordinary fact that deserves recognition. They uphold their values of honor and dignity, saying what they mean and meaning what they say.

Conversely, the West stands as the pinnacle of hypocrisy. They claim to champion human rights and free speech while acting in direct contradiction to these ideals. Their history is steeped in deception, corruption, and oppression.

Anyone who delves deeply into the Ukraine war understands that Russia has every right to defend itself and prevent Ukraine from joining NATO.

What is NATO without Russia if not a tool designed for its destruction? That was its very purpose from the start. The West aims to destroy Russia to maintain its hegemonic grip on Africa. But their plans have failed. They have already lost this battle, though they may not yet realize it. They will continue struggling until their power is irreversibly broken.

This is the fate of those who seek to oppress and exploit others. They wish to keep Africa in a state of poverty and instability for their own gain, but their time is up!

If you are an African, stay informed and pray for the liberation of our continent. I am not advocating for one country over another; I stand for peace and justice worldwide.

As President Trump recently said, "I am not for this country or that country, I am for the good of the world."

That is my stance as well—I long for a world of progress, peace, and an end to the injustice that has plagued Africa due to the greed of former colonial powers.

It is time for peace to reign on our continent so that we may truly experience life and prosperity.
