Solving Our Food Problem – The Role of the Church (Part 7)

As of December 2024, there are, on average, three churches per street in most cities across Southern Nigeria. Practically all African countries have a large number of churches.

As a matter of fact, Africa has the largest Christian population in the world, with over 800 million people and more than 50,000 churches. That is huge enough to make an impact on any society.

Unless the church has other missions that don’t care for the people, I think by now we should have gone past solving food problem in our nations.

Let me take Nigeria as a case study. People go to church on Sundays and most times during the week. An average Christian goes to church at least twice a week. That is more than enough to solve our food problem.

Many people still think the church is only for praying and singing. From the time of old, the church has always been an instrument of national transformation and an agent of change. (Read my previous article here: Using the Church as an Instrument of National Transformation (Part 3)

For the food problem we have now, the church has a big role to play.

First is to create awareness among the church members. If people can come to church to hear the Word of God, they can also act on it.

We have seen throughout the Scriptures how God blesses the works of people’s hands—from Abraham to Isaac, to Jacob, to Joseph, to Moses, and to all the great prophets, including Jesus. They all had testimonies of the Lord’s blessings when they put the Word to work.

God has answered our prayers by giving us lands, seeds, rain, and sunlight. Even nations with fewer resources have more than enough food to eat. How much more we that have abundance? It is absolutely unheard of!

Come to think of it, isn’t it an insult to God that, as His people, we are still hungry despite our large resources? Isn’t it an insult that we are still begging for food and importing it from outside our continent when we have vast arable lands? Isn’t it an insult to God that we are calling on governments and politicians to help us when we have our Heavenly Father?

I say the church must arise. The people must arise. Now is the time for us to change. Now is the time for Africa to change. Enough is enough. Enough of our foolishness and ignorance. We must solve our own problem and not call on the world to solve it for us.

We must make the change we want to see in our nations. Africa is the land of gold. Africa is the land of God. We have all the resources we’ll ever need. Why not take action? All we need to do is to put seeds in the ground. Every one of us must put seeds in the ground.

I’m thinking: Can we just create a challenge—“Solve Our Food Problem Challenge” or “Put Seeds in the Ground Challenge”? Let’s go all out in our numbers and put seeds in the ground.

As a church, let's distribute seeds, instead of only faith. Let's support local farming, acquisition of farming lands for our members, financial support, and partnerships with agricultural organizations.

Let’s start cultivating our lands and bringing forth the food that we need. Let the church arise and solve this food problem ravaging our nations.

People are dying because of hunger. They are malnourished, impoverished, and angry because of food shortages. Let’s go all out to solve this problem.

I believe the church can make a big impact in solving this problem—and it will—so that all glory and honor will go to the name of the Lord. God bless you!
