Solving Our Food Problem – The Role of the Elites and the Elders (Part 10)

In solving our food problem, we need the elites and the elders.

Who are these people? They are people who have power, influence, wisdom, experience, ideas, and wealth.

They are people who shape the future of any society. They wield significant power in influencing public opinions and policies, and determine the direction of any nation. These are two formidable forces that can enact change in any society.

Our elites and elders can use the resources at their disposal to solve our food problem. Unless they want us to continue like this and keep struggling to live, I believe there is so much they can do.

In my language, they say, “Agba kii wa l'ọjá, k’ori ọmọ tuntun o wọ,” meaning elders cannot be in a place and things go wrong. That is because of how much elders can do.

But many things are going wrong nowadays in our societies. Problems are piling up. Things are getting worse. Perhaps our elders and elites are not doing enough or failing to act.

To solve our food problem, we need our elders and elites' support. We need their wisdom, ideas, influence, experience, and wealth.

There are many elites in Africa who are well-to-do but are not supporting younger people. They have money, but they are not building industries or infrastructures that will foster development.

I'm wondering, what legacy do they want to leave for the younger generation? What do they want people to say about them after they've gone?

There is a lot of corruption and evil going on in our land. I’ve heard many times that some elites and elders are the culprits behind the problems in our land.

If this is so, then troubles will not leave their families, and they will surely pay for their wickedness. I can’t imagine such a level of dishonor to elderhood. Are these ones really elders or wolves? Do they have children? Are they thinking of the future or just of themselves and their families?

What has brought us this far? Who has bewitched us, Africans?

The same thing that our forefathers did when foreigners came before they colonized us is the same thing that many of our elites and elders are doing now. Many of them are selfish and wicked. We can’t continue like this if we want progress. We've got to change our ways. We’ve got to solve our problems.

We’ll appreciate our elites and elders more if they can contribute good towards the progress of our nations and not destroy them for the future generations.

Remember, it is what you do today that people will talk about tomorrow. Power might be in your hand today, but it will surely shift to another person tomorrow. So, use it for the common good.

As elites and elders, we can challenge the youths to go to the farm by doing it ourselves. We can distribute seeds and lands for farming. We can use our resources to support local farmers and communities.

We can bring foreign investors and organizations to our land. We can organize programs and seminars that will educate people more about farming and food security.

We can also use our experience and skills to mentor younger generations. We can do so much!

I know some would say, “But these younger ones are not ready to learn, they are not willing to do anything. They just want to eat and sleep.” I know, but definitely not all of them. There are still many good ones.

Why not create a platform that will support the ones who are really willing and interested? Why not reach out to those who are helpless and hopeless—youths who don’t know how their future would look like?

Let’s give hope to the hopeless. Let’s give the support that our nations truly need. Our great fathers who fought for our freedom sacrificed a lot so that we may live a better life. Let’s continue on this path.

I can’t but say a big thank you to our elites and elders who are already doing great things on our land. Your works will not go unnoticed, and posterity will remember you. We celebrate and thank you for your sacrifices and all the great things you’ve done. I know that, even more is yet to come.

I see a future filled with great minds and prosperous nations because of the invaluable roles of our elites and elders. Thanks for reading and God bless you!
