As of January 2025, at least one in four people in Africa is unemployed. A continent with the highest number of youth in the world—this is a recipe for disaster if no action is taken. Now, we understand the root cause of our insecurity.
When people have nothing to do, what will they do? As the saying goes, "An idle mind is the devil’s workshop." If our youths are not meaningfully engaged, they will inevitably find other, often destructive, ways to occupy their time. This is the reality we are witnessing today.
Our nations are grappling with numerous security challenges, but a significant portion of these issues can be mitigated through employment. Engaging people, especially the youth, in meaningful and productive activities is key to addressing this crisis.
Young people graduate from school only to find themselves with no opportunities. They roam the streets, searching for jobs, money, and purpose. Our continent is sitting on a powder keg, and unless we act swiftly, the situation will only worsen.
The truth is, Africa is full of job opportunities, but many are looking in the wrong direction. While it is true that governments have not done enough to create jobs, we must ask ourselves: What can we do? We can acquire skills, seek out opportunities to offer services, or start businesses.
The reality is that work exists for those willing to do it!
We face challenges in food security, housing, and transportation—each of these presents opportunities for employment. Addressing any of these issues can create sustainable livelihoods and reduce joblessness.
Take El Salvador as an example. A few years ago, gangs controlled the country, and insecurity was at an all-time high. However, when the government implemented policies to engage the youth in productive activities, the country began to stabilize.
Today, many people, including prison inmates, have been given opportunities to work in various fields—textile, fashion, food production, engineering, arts, plumbing, electrical work, commerce, and more. As a result, they have become contributors to society rather than liabilities.
El Salvador is now one of the safest countries on earth, thanks to these policies.
This is exactly what Africa needs. We must transform our population strength into opportunities, not crises. We are assets, not liabilities. Addressing unemployment will significantly reduce insecurity, fostering peace and harmony.

In turn, this will drive growth, development, and foreign investment, bringing prosperity to our land.
Unless insecurity has become a money-making venture for certain individuals in power, there should be no reason why these measures cannot be implemented. There are wealthy individuals among us who can establish industries and create jobs.

Some are already doing so, but we need more. We need collective action. Let’s support one another and fight this insecurity menace together.
More so, our education system must be restructured to address our societal challenges rather than merely producing graduates for foreign jobs. By taking small but meaningful steps, we can reduce unemployment, empower our youth, and secure a brighter future for generations to come.
The time to act is now! Together, I believe, we can turn the tide.
